National Student Nurse Congress 2019

Following the success of the first Pan London Student Nurse Congress in 2018, it was agreed with the Chief Nurse of St George's Hospital that the event should be opened up the students across the country. The event was well recieved from students on the day and attended by almost 200 student delegates from the UK. It was hosted by a number of fabulous student nurses and newly qualified nurse Helen Corry, Jack Sherry and James Whatley.

The day was commenced with a very inspirational presentation ketnote from Anne Marie Rafferty, President of RCN. Following the success of last years format, we continued to have thought provoking debates, discussions and workshops. We had the privilege to have with us on the day a number of guest speakers such which includes Dr Peter Carter, Professor Alison Leary, Capital Nurse Team, Professor Oliver Shanley, Jude Diggins and student nurses Jack Sherry and Harriet Louise, Steve Ford, Professor Geraldine Walthers, Julie Belton, Kevin Acott and of course, the 5 newly qualified nurses.

For the first time this year, the National Student Nurse Congress introduces an award to recognise the achievements of exceptional student nurses. Last year we launched the #PackofNurses Campaign to find the official collective noun for nurses; the result was a 'Pride' of Nurses. Building on the playing card theme we used for #PackofNurses, this year we used the diamond suit to symbolise the rising stars across the UK. We were looking for student nurses who show genuine passion for nursing, who go the extra mile, who strive to make things better and show potential to be a future nursing leader. As a result, 9 students from across the UK were nominated from their universities. We were proud to have them all with us on the day and the winner was announced at the end of the event. The winner of the National Student Nurse Congress 2019 is Katie Dutton from DeMontfort University, Leicester.

Pan London Student Nurse Congress 2018

The first Pan London Student Nurse Congress was founded in 2017 and held at St George's Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The congress was part of the NHS 70th celebration and it was well attended by over 250 delegates. The day consisted of stimulating, exciting and thought provoking topics in debate sessions, discussions and workshops. There were a steller line-up of inspirational nurse speakers including Professor Jane Cummings - CNO of England, Janet Davis - RCN CEO , Emeritus Professor Tony Butterwoth - Chair, Foundation of Nursing Studies, Dr Peter Carter OBE - Former RCN CEO, Professor Oliver Shanley - CNO of London, Professor Anne Marie Raffert CBE - Professor of Nursing Policy, King's College University and Professor Geradline Walters CBE - Director of Education, Standards and Policy, NMC.

In addition to hearing from our great speakers, students had the opportunity to meet students from all cohorts, across all four fields of Nursing, and from approximately twenty different universities from across the country. It was wonderful to have student partners from Kingston University, King's College London and Middlesex University to facilitate sessions and host the event. The day came to a close with the announcement of naming the collective noun for nurses: 'A Pride of Nurses'.

SNAP - Student Nurse Academic Partnership 2016 - 2017

SNAP was an idea that emerged out of the Internatioanl Nurse's Day celebration in 2015, "Nursing's Got Talent" organised my academics and students from Kingston Universtiy. The event demonstrated how enjoyable, and how much can be learned, when students and staff work together in partnership. SNAP was built on this experience by organising an event to empower students to share their ideas, for students and staff to work in partnership, and to create opportunities for students to shine. SNAP does not have the theatrical and creative focus of "Nursing's Got Talent" but instead, is a traditioncal academic conference where student nurses present their ideas and experiences about nursing theory, education or practice. Partnership has been achieved by students collaborating with an academic staff member of their choice to write their presentation.

The event ran for two years, of which it successfully invited influential speakers such as Jane Cummings - Chief Nursing Officer of England, Professor Ian Peate - Head of School, Bibraltar Health Authority and Editor of British Journal of Nursing, Caroline Alexander - Former Chief Nurse of London to be the keynotes to frame the day. All students involved were remarkable and gave very inspiring presentations, some have written their presentations into papers and have been accepted for publications in 2017 and 2018.
